Position Description

Announcer - The announcer is responsible for announcing various messages throughout the course of a swim meet. The primary job is to announce the current heat/lane/event in the water. Those interested in signing up for an announcer position must be comfortable speaking into a Public Address System, and must be able to speak clearly and directly. Announcer shifts last the duration of a session.

 

Average Shift Length - 4 Hours.

Clerk of Course – Clerk of Course personnel are responsible for the closing and seeding of each event.  This includes identifying swimmers who have not checked in or who have scratched each event.  The Clerk of Course ensures that each event is seeded properly.  This position takes a high attention to detail and is perhaps the most important position in running a meet smoothly.

Awards - Awards personnel are responsible for labeling and sorting Ribbons and A-Medals awarded for each event. Award stickers are placed on corresponding ribbons and/or A-Medals and then placed in that appropriate team's bag. Awards shifts last the duration of a session.

Check-In - Check in personnel are responsible for monitoring the swimmer event check-in area. This includes ensuring that swimmers do not swim more than the allowed number of events, as well as making sure that swimmers follow appropriate check-in/scratch procedures. Check-in is an integral part in running a swim meet properly.

 

Average Shift Length - 3 Hours.

 

Head Timer - The Head Timer is responsible for ensuring that swimmers receive times in the case of a stop-watch malfunction. The Head Timer will start 2 watches for each heat, and get a time for any lane that might have a timing issue. For example, if the Lane 1 watch does not start, the Lane 1 timer will raise their hand, and the Head Timer will then be responsible for getting a time for the Lane 1 Swimmer. Those interested in signing up for a Head Timer position ought to be comfortable running 2 stop watches, and able to react quickly. Head-Timer shifts last the duration of a session.

Hospitality - Hospitality personnel are responsible for overseeing coach's/official's lunches and coach's/official's/volunteer's refreshments. Responsibilities include portioning food, making coffee, and setting up coach's/official's lunches. All Hospitality personnel are expected to maintain a high standard of cleanliness (wash hands, wear gloves, etc.). Eating (outside of small refreshment) while working in the hospitality station is prohibited. Lunch is available for purchase at the snack bar. Hospitality shifts last the duration of a session.

Intermediary - Intermediaries are responsible for assisting the Colorado System Operator in verifying results and times. This is a highly detail-oriented position. Those interested in signing up for an intermediary position must have an attention to detail and must be comfortable analyzing numbers. Intermediary positions last the duration of a session.

 

Average Shift Length - 4 Hours

 

Marshal - Marshals are responsible for monitoring swimmer safety and crowd control. A Marshal's job includes making sure that swimmers are diving only in designated diving lanes and using 3-point entries in all other lanes. They are to make sure that only carded Coaches and Officials (and timers) are allowed on the restricted pool deck. They are also to prevent any running, or activities that put the swimmers in danger while in the water. Marshals are to pay attention at ALL TIMES. Cell phones, newspapers, books, etc. are strictly prohibited while on duty. Those interested in signing up for a Marshal position must be comfortable enforcing rules to both swimmers and adults.

 

Average Shift Length - 3 - 4 Hours

 

Runners - Runners are responsible for the transfer of paperwork between the pool deck and the computer office, as well as the posting of heats/lanes and results for the swimmers. There are 3 basic jobs for runners:

 

• 1. Office - Pool Deck (Paperwork goes to Announcer, Referee, Colorado, and Timing Chairs)

• 2. Pool Deck - Office (Collects timing slips at conclusion of event for Colorado, returns paperwork from Colorado to office).

• 3. Poster (Posts heats/lanes and results for swimmers) Those interested in signing up for a runner position must be willing to be on their feet for extended periods of time and able to follow specific directions exactly. The runner position is crucial to the success of a swim meet.

 

Snack Bar - Snack Bar personnel are responsible for overseeing the preparation and sale of all products sold at the snack bar. This includes but is not limited to: handling money, preparing food, and maintaining a clean area suitable for food preparation. All snack bar personnel are expected to wash their hands and wear gloves. Please note that eating the food sold at the snack bar for free is prohibited. Those interested in signing up for a snack bar position ought to be comfortable with food preparation, cleaning, handling money, and effectively communicating with both children and adults.

 

Average Shift Length - 2 - 4 Hours

 

Timers - Timers are responsible for timing behind the competition lanes. Timers are extremely important, as they ensure that the swimmers receive the appropriate time for their event. Cell phones, newspapers, books, etc. are strictly prohibited while on timing duty, as any distractions could prevent a timer from stopping the watch at the correct time. Those interested in signing up for a timing position ought to be comfortable paying close attention at all times.
